Data Transfer Guide - Android Devices
Introduction
This guide provides information and instructions to help you prepare for the transfer of data when migrating your Android phone/tablet. The instructions below have been completed on a Samsung phone with Android 12; the steps required may vary depending on device and software.
System Requirements
- Android Device
- Reliable Internet connection (mobile data - 4G or Wi-Fi)
- Microsoft OneDrive app
- (optional) Google account
Action is required to ensure you retain access to any data you need prior to migrating your device. This can take up to an hour to complete.
The table below summarises what data can or cannot be retained and steps you need to take.
Data | Can Transfer? | Steps to Take |
Contacts | Yes | When you sign into Outlook on your new phone, your work contacts will automatically download. Your contacts can also be saved as a vcard/vcf file and backed up to OneDrive. Contacts can also be synchronised with a personal email account |
SMS Messages | No | SMS messages cannot be retained. Please make sure you take screen shots or email the contents of messages that you need to keep. |
Apps | Yes | Any apps that you have purchased can be installed on your new phone. Login to your device with your Google account and you will be able to install any previously purchased apps without paying again. Any work apps that you have access to can similarly be re-installed. |
Personalisation | No | You will need to setup a new passcode, biometrics, App groups, wallpapers and alarm/clock settings on your device. |
Photos | Yes | Photos can be backed up to OneDrive or transferred to a desktop/laptop. |
Once the new device has been set up, proceed to the Transfer Guide Part 2.
